Introduction to Hu Zhuanglin Distinguished Translator Fellowship

In honour of Professor Hu Zhuanglin and his extraordinary contribution to Australian studies from the late 1970s, the Australian Studies Centre at Peking University (PKUASC) has established a Distinguished Translator Fellowship in his name, with the view of promoting Chinese translation in the field of Australian Studies. As a collaborative program between PKUASC and the Foundation of Australian Studies in China (FASIC), the Hu Zhuanglin Distinguished Translator Fellowship will be selected and awarded annually by an academic committee, whose Director is Professor David Walker, BHP Billiton Chair Professor of Australian Studies at Peking University.

The closing date for the 2014 Fellowship applications is July 31. Preference will be given to an established translator who can demonstrate a proven track record in translating Australian writings in humanities, social sciences or literature since 2000. Applicants should also specify any agreements they may have signed to publish the work they have proposed to translate or their plans to have the translation published.

One 2014 Fellowship will be awarded to a well-established translator, who is expected to be a Fellow at the PKUASC for three months, from September 1 to November 30. During the term of the Fellowship, the translator will be based at the PKUASC, conducting his/her own translation work and contributing as appropriate to the PKUASC. This may involve a public lecture or guest lectures to students studying translation.

The fellowship includes a living stipend of AUD$6,000 plus a round trip airfare. Applications written in English outlining the translation proposal, expected completion date and publishing plans along with a standard resume including the names and contact information of two referees should be sent to Professor David Walk at david.walker@deakin.edu.au before July 31, 2014. The inaugural fellowship will be announced before August 30, 2014.
